Course Objectives
- Learn how to use the specific energies of mid summer to improve treatments.
- Be able to be in tune with the energies of mid summer and benefit from them in your health.
- Be able to practise the two traditional qi gong exercises for the two fortnightly periods.
- Be aware of the multiple aspects active at this time of year.
Course Outline
0 hrs - 15 min
Understand the Grain in Ear solar period that is so productive and busy followed by the key point of change Summer Solstice, longest day, shortest night and where yin is born in the heart of yang.
15 min - 30 min
Understand the images of the six 5 day periods. The praying mantis hatch out, the shrike sing and the mockingbirds stop singing in the hot humid weather. The stag sheds its antlers, the cicadas sing out and the pinellia plant grows at midsummer.
30 min - 1 hrs
Understand the 6 hexagrams and their advice for the time. The abundance of the Great Harvest, the well-ordered Family and the replenishment of the Well. The Mutual Attraction of opposites, the Return of the yin and the Establishment of a new period.
1 hrs - 1.25 hrs
Understand the importance of the heart in this midsummer period. The greatest light, the longest days, the highest height of the sun, no shadow. 100% giving with no thought of return. The peace, calm and joy of the heart.
1.25 hrs - 1.5 hrs
Understand the importance of the 7th branch wu 午 as the climax of yang, its crowning point and transformation into the return of yin. Reminder of the pair zi wu 子 午, branch 1 and branch 7, midwinter and midsummer, midnight and noon.
1.5 hrs - 1.75 hrs
A reminder of the importance of ceremony in ancient times to mark key turning points in time. In Beijing the emperor held ceremonies in different temples to celebrate the spring equinox, summer solstice, autumn equinox and winter solstice.
1.75 hrs - 2 hrs
Guard the heart from heat in the middle of summer. Rest, don't overdo it, don't sweat excessively, eat light, cooling foods and drinks, nap in the day, keep a cheerful mood. Use kidney points, and HT 3, HT 5, HT 7 and HT 8.
2 hrs - 2.25 hrs
Remember the importance of the summer solstice/midsummer in other cultures where it is often celebrated. eg Midsummer sunrise at Stonehenge, midsummer celebrations in pagan, Druid, Celtic, Gaelic groups, St John's Day celebrations in Scandinavia.
2.25 hrs - 2.5 hrs
Traditionally Grain in Ear was the day for ceremonies to bid farewell to the flower goddess, as they were wilting and dying. These were to give thanks and hope for their return next year. She was welcomed on the second day of the second lunar month.
2.5 hrs - 3 hrs
Learn the Grain in Ear and Summer Solstice traditional qi gong exercises. Grain in Ear exercise activates thoracic vertebra 6 and helps the stomach. Summer Solstice exercise activates thoracic 5 and helps the liver.
