Series Overview

Matt Callison, author of the Sports Medicine Acupuncture textbook is a frequent international lecturer and presenter at symposiums and doctoral programs worldwide. He is a pioneer in North America in the research and development of motor point acupuncture and treatment protocols. He is one of the first to combine sports medicine clinical applications and truly integrate them with traditional Chinese medicine. He is well-known for his work with professional athletes and in developing treatment strategies for the orthopedic injuries affecting the aging athlete. Matt Callison joins his colleagues Brian Lau and Ian Armstrong to present the SMAC Webinar program. This advanced training consists of four Modules and is designed as an intensive curriculum and sequential learning format. This webinar series prepares the practitioner for the “assessment and treatment of injury classes” found in each Module, which are taught as a live in-person course.

In this Series, we are covering Module II: The Low Back, Hip and Groin.

Course Overview

This 2-day anatomy and cadaver webinar is an amazing integration of sports medicine functional anatomy and TCM sinews (jingjin) channel theory. Each day of this workshop is divided into distinct morning and afternoon sessions. The morning session consists of didactic presentations on Functional Anatomy and Anatomy of the Sinew Channels that are integrated to focus on the functional relationship between neuromuscular anatomy and the myofascial jingjin tissues and their relationship to the low back, hip and groin. This information is followed by the afternoon session that consists of: 1) Assessment, 2) Motor Point Location and Protocols, 3) Cadaver Presentations.

Course Objectives

  • Learn myofascial pathways that correlate with the low back, hip and groin and the tissues belonging to each sinew channel with their functional anatomy relationship.
  • Learn in theory how to determine which my myofascial sinew channels need to be assessed and treated for musculoskeletal injury.
  • Learn normal and abnormal movement patterns of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex.
  • The practitioner will learn nerve pathways, dermatomal distributions, muscle myotomes, motor point locations in relationship to channel topography.
  • The practitioner will learn postural, functional and muscle imbalances that can lead to pain and dysfunction based on TCM theory.

This class highlights how channel sinews (jingjin) organize efficient movement patterns & balance the joint structures of the low back, hip & groin. Focus is on understanding how imbalances in these channels can lead to pain & and injury.

Course Overview

This 2-day class highlights how the channel sinews (jingjin) also known in modern day as myofascial sequences organize efficient movement patterns and balance the major joint structures of the low back, hip and groin. Focus is on understanding how imbalances in these channels can contribute to pain and injury. Western assessment will be taught and practiced with TCM based acupuncture treatment and channel theory applied for the practitioner to discover measurable differences.

Postural Assessment and Corrective Exercise

Course Overview

This 2-day cutting-edge course will teach the practitioner how to assess postural dysfunction and prescribe therapeutic exercises for postural, muscle and channel imbalances that have directly contributed to the patient's musculoskeletal injury. This course will teach the acupuncturist important skills to prescribe specific exercises in the management of their patient’s health care. Exercising different body parts simultaneously in specific and coordinated motions activates the myofascial sinew channels so that form and function can align. The practitioner will learn to integrate acupuncture protocols with exercise prescription, including how to use intra-dermal needle point prescriptions on the Extraordinary Vessel master points to alleviate discomfort, increase proprioception and enhance clinical outcomes.

  • The practitioner will learn visual assessment skills for postural imbalances of the low back, hip and groin.
  • Participants will learn how to effectively prescribe therapeutic exercises that will help balance lumbopelvichip complex that are important to treat for organ related dysfunction and musculoskeletal injuries.

Course Overview

Motor entry point locations and needle protocols are shown for many low back, hip and groin muscles. Matt Callison discusses the latest research on motor entry point locations and needle depths. The practitioner will see many motor entry points in human muscle tissue from AcuSport Education's cadaver dissections including a bifurcated piriformis and scitaic nerve. Observing the location of the motor nerve entrance into the muscle can help the practitioner enhance their skills and appreciation of needle depth.
