TCM Recognises Thyroid Disharmonies on its Own Terms

By Sue Nelson

'Energy' and 'Warmth' are the 2 end-products of Thyroid Gland-initiated physiology, and have been since our evolution from sea to land vertebrates, 400 million years ago. Who understands this best: 5,000-year-old TCM or 200-year-old Western Medicine?

Course Overview

Is it important that TCM makes no mention of the Thyroid Gland in the San Jiao? After all, the 2 desirable end-products of Thyroid Gland-initiated physiology - Energy and Warmth - are more thoroughly covered by TCM than by any other medical system! But, does anyone fully understand all the SYSTEMIC consequences of Thyroid Gland-initiated physiology? Certainly, our current Western Medicine approach could not be more destructive! The Thyroid Gland is subject to radiation, removal, or redundancy due to a daily supply of Synthroid, i.e. synthetic T4. This has been the case since 1973 when the TSH test replaced all other monitoring tests and underpinned the exclusive use of Synthroid as a treatment. Sadly, 200 years of valid Thyroid research was derailed in the late 20th century, when pharmaceutical interests catapulted Synthroid into the world's number 1 medication seller. Meanwhile, TCM has been quietly, but effectively, treating 'Goitre-Disease' with Iodinated herbal formulas since 2700 BC! What compelled ancient TCM practitioners to use Iodinated substances - such as Seaweed - to break down Goitres, centuries before 'Iodine' was even named in 1811? Furthermore, how did they know so much about the Root and Branch causes of 'Goitre-Disease', in both the Hypothyroid and the Hyperthyroid categories? TCM has effectively nailed it for 5,000 years! A comparative history of both TCM and Western Medicine can only bring a deeper understanding of all things Thyroid-related.

Course Objectives

  • The student will be able to identify key Thyroid-related milestones - in both TCM and Western Medicine - from ancient evolutionary times to contemporary times.
  • The student will learn why, and how, Iodine is used in both TCM and in Western Medicine, thus highlighting the different approaches.
  • The student will understand the political background of 20th century Western Medicine when Iodine was identified as the substrate for Thyroid Hormones.
  • The student will learn how to cross-reference Western Medicine's concept of 'Mucin' to TCM's concept of 'Phlegm-Damp', for a deeper clinical understanding of both medical systems.
  • The student will learn how to identify the TCM Root and Branch priorities for both Hypothyroid and Hyperthyroid presentations.

Course Outline

0 hrs - 15 min
Although TCM has no reference to the Thyroid Gland, it understands the 2 end-products of Thyroid Gland-initiated physiology i.e. Energy and Warmth! Western Medicine only began to understand the 'systemic' nature of Thyroid Disharmonies 200 years ago.
15 min - 30 min
Ever since our Sea-dwelling ancestors became Land vertebrates, we have needed a Brain, a Skeleton and a Thyroid Gland, all developed at the same time. Iodine is essential, not optional! No continent is without 'Goitre-Belts' in the inland regions.
30 min - 45 min
China has always had the challenge of Goitre-Belts. TCM practitioners used sea-sponge for 'Goitre-Disease' as early as 2,700 BC! By 1587, records show a sophisticated Root-and-Branch herbal formula for Goitre, based on a Hypothyroid presentation.
45 min - 1 hrs
From the moment Iodine was identified as the substrate for Thyroid Hormones, in 1927, the race was on to synthesise T4. With so many Goitre-Belts in the world, the financial stakes were high. Many 20th century factors politicised Thyroid healthcare.
1 hrs - 1.25 hrs
The dominance of Synthroid and the TSH test marked the end of unbiased Thyroid research and ushered in the 'era of the laboratory'. But many wonderful research discoveries were recorded: Bromide toxicity; 'the Myxoedema Heart'; Monitoring tests etc.
1.25 hrs - 1.5 hrs
2 major monitoring tests came out in the 1970s: the TSH test (Blood) and the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis test (Cells). Unfortunately the TSH test focuses on Blood T4 only, and fails to test the efficiency of T3/Iodinated Hormones entering the Cells.
1.5 hrs - 1.75 hrs
Late 20th century research has given us a good biochemical picture of how Iodinated Hormones enter the Cells to stimulate ATP, for Energy and Warmth. A close inspection of my Physiology Chart will show that Cells are the main drivers of Metabolism.
1.75 hrs - 2 hrs
The 'MUCIN Face', unique to Hypothyroid patients, is caused by hypo-functioning Cells. But, MUCIN can be likened to TCM's PHLEGM-DAMP, originating in the Middle Burner, transformed by Heat or Wind, and driven upwards to clog the San Jiao channels.
2 hrs - 2.25 hrs
It takes the forceful moving power of Fire or Wind to 'transform' Thin Mucous into PHLEGM-DAMP and move it upwards, to clog the San Jiao. But how can we eliminate Thin Mucous at its source in the Middle Burner? Learn what the ancient TCM writers say.
2.25 hrs - 2.5 hrs
The 6 quintessential TCM HYPOTHYROID syndromes consist of Spleen, Kidney and Heart disharmonies, combined with Deficiencies of Qi, Yang or Blood PLUS the secondary pathogen - PHLEGM-DAMP - in the San Jiao. We look at 'Thyr-Obesity' as our case study.
2.5 hrs - 2.75 hrs
The 6 quintessential TCM HYPERTHYROID syndromes consist of Liver, Kidney and Heart disharmonies, combined with Excesses of Fire, Qi Stagnation or Wind. Bipolar Disorder is a classic Hyperthyroid syndrome, involving a lethal Phlegm-Fire combination.
2.75 hrs - 3 hrs
Current medical protocols are Thyroid Gland-destroying protocols! No attention is paid to the Cells, despite recent biochemical discoveries. TCM precedes Western Medicine in its SYSTEMIC approach. But, both medical systems can continue to learn.
