Course Overview

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is an increasingly discussed and often misunderstood condition that can present with complex, multisystem symptoms. This engaging course explores mast cell biology, MCAS, mastocytosis, diagnostic criteria, common clinical presentations, red flags, laboratory findings, and the challenges surrounding overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. The course examines current research on acupuncture and mast cell activity, including proposed mechanisms involving connective tissue, mechanotransduction, sensory nerves, inflammatory mediators, and mast cell degranulation. Research on moxibustion, herbs, supplements, and other integrative approaches is also reviewed, with careful attention to what the evidence does—and does not—support. Cameron Bishop, DAOM, L.Ac., brings more than 30 years of clinical experience and decades of teaching to the subject. His practical teaching style combines evidence-based medicine, traditional East Asian concepts, Japanese acupuncture strategies, clinical observations, memorable graphics, and real-world examples. The goal is to make a complicated and fascinating subject understandable, clinically relevant, and enjoyable while giving acupuncturists a thoughtful framework for working with patients who present with suspected or diagnosed MCAS.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the basic physiology of mast cells and their role in immune, inflammatory, and neurovascular signaling.
  • Explain proposed mechanisms by which acupuncture and moxibustion may influence mast-cell activation, degranulation, and mediator signaling.
  • Evaluate current research regarding acupuncture, moxibustion, herbs, and supplements in relation to mast-cell activity and MCAS.
  • Identify practical Japanese and Chinese acupuncture and Moxa strategies, safety considerations, and methods for monitoring clinical outcomes in patients with mast-cell-related symptoms.
